About Us

Sydney Bridge is a not for profit company that has been set up to run an environmentally friendly business for the benefit of the local community. The company aims prevent reusable items going to landfill and re-use them to help those in need by providing good quality second-hand furniture and household items at affordable prices.

Landfill is expensive and stores up environmental problems for many years to come. In 2004 – 05, 448,000 tones of household waste were created in West Leeds and this was less than a third of all waste in Leeds (commercial and industrial).

By diverting a lot of unwanted rubbish in terms of used furniture we have created volunteer opportunities for disadvantaged people helping them to achieve skills and work experience while helping them to boost their confidence and move on into mainstream employment. We have helped pass on skills in carpentry to many disadvantaged people who include BMEs, Refugees and Asylum seekers people from the European Union (migrants) and many other disadvantaged people receiving benefits. This has helped improve people’s skills in carpentry (DIY) and confidence which has made them self reliant, empowered and enabled them to move into the construction industry. We have a strong partnership with organisations such as Archway Centre for young people, Canopy Housing Association (helping renovate run down properties for refugees and asylum seekers). We are also a member of Furniture Re-use Network (FRN) and partnership with South Leeds Alternative Trading Enterprise (SLATE), Leeds and Moortown Furniture Store, St Vincent and St Jude and Emmaus.
